Department of Bodo

The Boro are one of the indigenous ethno-linguistic communities of North Eastern India, belonging to the Indo-Mongoloid ethnic group of the Tibeto-Burman language family .Boros are the single largest community among the tribal groups of the NE region. The language of the Boro {community} is known as a Boro language.

The Govt. of Assam recognized Boro language, as medium of instruction for primary level of education in 1963. It was recognized as associated official language of the state in 1984. Gauhati University and the North Estern Hill Univesity (NEHU), Shillong recognize Boro language as one of the Modern Indian Language (MIL). It has been also included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution in 2003. The Gauhati University has introduced Boro Elective as a subject in the Degree course in 2000 and the Gauhati Univesity has introduced Boro as a Major subject in the course since 2006. At present the department has been running the PG Course under Bodoland University from 2020

The Boro Department of Barama College was introduced since 1982 eleven years after the establishment of the college in 1971. It is to be mentioned that 90% of the total students in the college are Bor speaking students. On 9th July 1982 the Department of Boro MIL was introduced in pre degree without having any regular (appointed) teacher but was run by few Boro speaking lecturers of the College who had deep concern for the development of the Boro language honorarily, namely :Mrs. Renu Boro (department of Economics); Mr. Khagen Medhi (department of English); and Mr. Nareswar Narzary. In 1985 this department was introduced in degree level. The Elective course was introduced in 2000 and the Major subject was introduced in 2006. Thought different time different teachers (including college lecturers) had been rendering service on temporary basis. It is one of the remarkable that Boro department has been introduced PG course under the Bodoland University from 2020.
