The department of Geography was established in 1981 with the introduction of Pre-University(Arts) classes. The pioneer was Sri. Khagendra Nath Das. In 1984-85 two year degree classes (General Course) were offered and thereafter Three Year Degree Course(Arts) was finally started in 1985. Three Year Degree course in Science Stream was initiated in 1995 while Higher Secondary Science was introduced in 1992. Apart from Sri. Khagendra Nath Das other notable former teachers who contributed immensely are Sri. Ganesh Barua, Sri. Surajit Barman, Sri. Gitesh Chandra Kalita, Sri. Akan Chandra Das, Sri. Samudra Nath Deka and Sri. Baikuntha Kalita. Presently, the faculties who are serving the department are Dr. Indira Das(HoD), Mrs. Preceileena Koch, Miss Pompi Bora and Dr. Ratul Das with their varied study interests in Fluvial Geomorphology, Cartography, Social Geography, GIS and Remote Sensing, Hazard Management, Gender Studies, Tourism Geography etc. The teachers have a good number of research papers and publications in the UGC care list, Web of Science, Scopus, Springer etc. The department has ample scope for research and development. The initiative of the teachers in imparting practical field based knowledge, group discussions, seminars and awareness programmes have blossomed into a conducive environment of quality education empowered by a holistic approach. A good number of books, journals, P.hD thesis, M.Phil dissertation, cartographic instruments, aerial images, satellite images, toposheets, weather instruments are available in the deapartment. Alumni from the department have the record of being successful in various sectors.
