Barama College was established in 1971 with arts stream and was brought under Deficit-Grant- in Aid system in 1978. For aspiring standard 10 passed students there was no educational institution imparting Science education in entire western part of Nalbari (then) district covering Barama Subdivision, Tamulpur Subdivision and Salbari subdivision. To provide opportunity of science education to students primarily of this locality surrounding Barama, in 1992 a few leading personalities of the locality with support of existing college Governing Body science stream was introduced with existing Barama College. Initially the Science Stream imparted education only for 10+2 standard. At this stage the Physics department was run by one teacher and with very limited laboratory and other infrastructure. Later on few philanthropists of the society donated few infrastructure and in 1994 degree level was introduced and more number of teachers were appointed. In 1997 major course was introduced in the department. Now the department runs three year degree course, both major and general course, with due permission from Gauhati University (G.U.) with a center of examination for practical examination also. At present the science stream have permanent affiliation, part-2 concurrence (general course) from G.U. Unfortunately the department concurrence for the final year of major course is under consideration of the authority of G.U. the departmental faculty strength is four.
The infrastructure facilities of the department are not adequate. The authority is leaving no stone unturned to develop the infrastructure facility of the department with limited financial resources. After the formation of Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) in 2005, the college is now being fed with grants in terms of infrastructure development, laboratory development and library development from the BTAD authority.
The department has two laboratory rooms, one departmental room and a store room. One of the laboratories is a general laboratory which is used by different classes in different shifts. The other laboratory is a dark room laboratory which is used by semester 5 and semester 6 students to perform practical on optics.
